Pine Grove Lodge:

There are people I meet as I spend time traveling around who simply command respect because of who they are. Now, sometimes I find such people far from home, but occasionally I run into one that’s right here in the State of Maine.

One such person is Bob Howe who, along with his wife Andrea, runs Pine Grove Lodge up on Pleasant Ridge in the Bingham area. Bob embodies everything I respect most in a Maine guide. A big, rugged man, he is gentle and kind when dealing with others. A life-long sportsman, Bob’s knowledge of hunting and fishing in Maine is huge, and what he doesn’t know, he’s busy learning about. Bob’s got an excellent sense of humor, which seems to me an essential quality if you want to be a Maine guide, because you know sure as the sun comes up something’s going to go wrong and you’ll need a few laughs to get you through it.

I am particularly taken with Bob’s common sense, and I can readily illustrate how sharp he is. He had the good sense to marry Andrea, who is one of the best country kitchen cooks you will ever come across. Plus she’s a wicked friendly person whether you are talking to her the first time ever over the telephone, or if you sitting down at her table to share a meal for the fifteenth time.

So obviously I admire and enjoy the Howes, but what about the quality of their outfitting business? If you enjoy the old-style relaxed country atmosphere then you are going to have a ball at their lodge.

But what do you want to do? Let’s see... if it is snowmobiling, canoeing, ATVing, hiking, white water rafting, trout fishing, bass fishing, pike fishing, rabbit hunting, bear hunting, cat hunting, moose hunting or just having a darn good time wandering around the Maine woods in a pickup truck, then they’ve got just what you are looking for.

Yup, the Howes are good people and Pine Grove Lodge is fine place to spend outdoor time right here at home. That’s why I have selected them as the recipients of this month’s Harry’s Choice Award.
